Nvidia intends to greatly scale up artificial intelligence computing resources in Australia, collaborating with local cloud and data centre providers to create up to 2 gigawatts of AI infrastructure by 2027.
Currently, Australia’s existing data centre computing capacity is around 1.6 gigawatts, and the planned expansion could more than double that, according to figures quoted by Data Centres Australia from data centre research firm DC Byte.
According to Nvidia, it is collaborating with companies such as Firmus, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk which are Australian infrastructure firms. The companies are building AI ready facilities that will leverage Nvidia’s DSX platform, a technical and architectural framework of computing, networking and software infrastructure for delivering high-performance AI workloads.
Other companies in the broader Nvidia alliance are Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport and ResetData. The new infrastructure will provide more Australian startups, universities, researchers, developers and businesses with the ability to leverage accelerated computing to develop and deploy AI models, applications and agents, Nvidia said.
This expansion is coinciding with a continuing rise in demand for AI computing in Australia and globally. The extra capacity, Nvidia added, could also drive investments in new power generation to meet rising demand for AI infrastructure.
Australia wants to leverage data centre investment and establish a bigger presence in the global AI sector. But the quick expansion of data centres has also generated alarm over their power and water consumption, and this has been pressing for tougher environmental regulations.
Nvidia claimed that the renewable energy resources, digital infrastructure and tech talent base in Australia create a solid foundation for scaling AI computing capabilities and further development of AI.
