On Thursday, Kuwait denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Mount Hermon in Syria, which it said crossed into the country’s “territorial borders and sovereignty.
Netanyahu was accompanied by Defence Minister Israel Katz and senior military commanders on Wednesday when he visited the top of Mount Hermon. In the visit, he said Israel had “absolute control” over the region from Mount Hermon to the Yarmouk River and said Israel wouldn’t permit what he called a “terrorist army” to be set up close to its border.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry commented that Netanyahu’s incursion was illegal and that Israel’s repeated raids and incursions in Syria were creating a “dangerous escalation” that poses a risk to regional security and stability.
The ministry reaffirmed Kuwait’s support for Syria’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also condemned the Israeli attacks, and called on the UN Security Council to do its duty and halt the attacks and enforce international obligations and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement of Forces between Syria and Israel.
Netanyahu’s visit was also condemned by Syria and Jordan. Damascus has referred to it as a provocative measure that impinges on its sovereignty and Jordan has termed it a violation of international law.
Since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December of 2024, Israel has been deployed in portions of southern Syria. Israeli officials have stated that the presence is to stop the hostile forces from setting up within the vicinity of Israel’s border.
